June 2022 Celebrated in BreconPlatinum Jubilee

The streets of Brecon were vibrant with celebration, in commemoration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The appreciation for her 70 years of service to the UK were contained within a four-day period of varying festivities; from a street party in Lion Street, to a Freddy Mercury tribute act (Luke as Freddy) at the Promenade bandstand.

Brecon Story, the volunteer-led local history and culture group has published a printed and online tour of some of the key locations in the community’s near thousand year history. And they are inviting people to join them for a free guided tour of the heritage trail starting outside the Guildhall at 2pm on Sunday, 4th June, when the walk will be started by the Mayor Cllr Michaella Davies.

WALK: The Brecon Story was born in the depths of the covid lockdown. It was inspired and supported by The 15-Minute Heritage Fund initiative from Cadw and The National Lottery Heritage Fund, helping to discover the local history and architecture that exists within a fifteen minute walk of our homes. Elizabeth Jeffreys, who helped to found Brecon Story said:

Local businesses also joined in on the celebrations, with banners and bunting lining the shops along High Street Inferior and High Street Superior.

As well as the decorations, gifted by the efforts of the young people who joined the team at Saint Mary’s Church for their Messy Jubilee event, the town was graced with
the presence of the Cosplay Queen, and her friendly pet dinosaur.

During this time, there were a host of stalls, offering up a range of souvenirs to remember the Jubilee by; whether that be with a pair of Union Jack boots or a thick, hand-crafted blanket – to remember the warmth of Brecon’s collective joy at such a special time in the UK’s history.

From the cry of the Town Crier, to the singing bells, to the choirs of voices and street parties that resounded through Brecon, there was an enchanting sense of community and camaraderie. A grand display of appreciation from all those who embraced the opportunity to join together in celebration now exists as a part of Brecon’s Story, and will live forever in its history.
