The Brecon Town Concert Band has been entertaining people across Mid Wales and beyond for half a century and it is inviting new members to come and join them in making music.
The group includes wind, brass and percussion players of all levels - from learners to professionals, aged from eight to eighty. The repertoire takes in a wide range of music. What’s more members reckon they can get non-musicians starting to play in just six months!
The Band is all about sharing their love of music with the public. They stage shows at Theatr Brycheiniog, many local agricultural shows, in bandstands, on sea fronts, in gardens and in Bethel Square. The total runs to some two dozen events a year. And the range of music is mind-boggling!
“We play arrangements of pop songs, film music, TV scores, stage music, classical music, jazz and Christmas carols,” explains conductor and director Dave Jones.
“From Abba to Wallace and Gromit, via Elton John, Take That and Tchaikovsky. (Look below for a list of the current repertoire.) Rehearsals happen at Theatr Brycheiniog from 7-9pm on Monday evenings with band members playing fun music and having a good time.
“I’ve got a very light-hearted approach,” adds Dave. “And I think people appreciate that. We don’t take ourselves too seriously, but we do play to a decent standard, and we do have fun.”
So do you need an instrument? “No! If you haven’t got an instrument,” says band member Mavis, “we’ve got instruments. So there’s nothing to stop you coming along, unless you’re doing something else on a Monday evening. In which case I’d suggest you change!” “I’d say give it a go,” adds Emma, another band member. “What have you got to lose?
We’re a really nice bunch.”
And if you need a band for an event, give Dave Jones a shout to discuss where and when. The Band has posted a range of videos, as co-productions with Brecon Story on YouTube here:
