Local History

Who were the 910 women who signed and donated to have Gwenllian’s portrait painted? The Gwenllian Morgan Local History Group aims to find out!

While most women signed by using their husband’s name - and no first name - the subscription book is organised street by street and a number of local Brecon residents have already found their grandmothers in the document. Another researcher found 7 family members listed!

We are using a range of historical tools to provide a snapshot of Brecon life in the early 1900’s,  researching individuals by name or by street. We have received some valuable guidance from Mary Thorley, chair, Welsh Women's Archive, on the challenges of researching women’s history as well as the support of the y Gaer library staff.

The Gwenllian History Local History Group is now meeting on the first Tuesday of the month at 10am at Theatr Brycheiniog to share our progress.  If you’d like to join in, please send an email to breconstory@gmail.com. As a start, we’d be pleased to send you a digitised list of the women who signed the subscription book and donated - between a penny to a guinea - to the commission of Gwenllian’s oil portrait.

Our Stories

Brecon Story

Brecon Story offers an insight to the ‘fabric’ of our town - what makes it special, both now and because of the stories that have shaped its history and the heritage buildings that we are so proud of.

Both our residents and people who visit the town can be enriched by the knowledge and context that these stories offer you.

"Bringing Gwenllian Morgan to Life"

Brecon Women's History Group

Brecon enjoys a rich history, going back to the mid-5th century. While women have played key roles in that history, their stories have not been well researched or celebrated.
